Senior Showcase

This years senior showcase was a really great mix of artwork.

Lauren Ploof and Tim Irwin definitely take the prize for current event satire. Lauren's piece was set in the office. It was a commentary on todays conformity in the workplace. The desk had a computer shell stuffed with all sorts of commercial items that someone might want to have in a days work. Even more interesting and shocking was when you move further down the desk. Upon opening the drawers you get a little perspective to this 'uniformity.' there are dozens of pill bottles, booze and books on female masculinity to be found. I think they represent how people deal with conformity.

Margaret Cuff had one of the more elaborate pieces. Hers was a very interactive piece that discussed cancer and its effects as it had a very strong impact on her. At the entrance, you are told to pick a carton of cigarettes. After you move down a cigarette gilded tunnel and have to choose a path. It was at this point that i realized these were the lungs. as i walked down the path into the left lung, I saw Pictures of women from the roaring twenties holding cigarettes. They morphed into disgusting blobs of red mess obviously depicting the degradation of the lung after smoke. The right lung obviously paints the picture of her grandmother. There is a black lace wrapped pack of cigarettes and a classy deville on the wall. On the floor was a lung. It was a shocking experience overall and very personal.

Ashley Rombough had one of the crazier projects in the gallery. Hers was very interactive as well. You walk through the cloth drape into the room that immediately cries out "Operation!" It's an Operating room complete with rubber cadaver and everything. The head and legs are covered leaving just the chest open. real life procedures are projected on the chest from above. The body was kind of creepy to touch, as it had a slightly more dense feel than a real body, but never the less, the looks on peoples faces as they stepped out of the operating room were priceless.

Tim Irwin's scene was among my favorite. It deals with current issues in a 3D cave atmosphere. It is a meeting between post apocalyptic now and the days of the cavemen. In Tim's cave, we see cave paintings of the stock market crashing, the death date of various metals, stick figures with red ties spearing a blue outlined bull (a little political comic here) and the plagues. Scattered around are spray cans which tie the cave paintings to current day graffiti. The skeleton on the floor is definitely Tim's signature on the piece as it has his token hat plastered to the head.

Louvre Art Review

While in France over J-term 2010 I had the opportunity to experience the world famous Louvre. Filled with thousands upon thousands of pieces of work spanning over who knows just how many years, the Louvre would take a visiter a lifetime to see all of the work. Among the work that i saw in my three hour tour, was the coveted Mona Lisa painting. While this painting is considered by many to be one of the most incredible paintings ever i was slightly unimpressed. the painting sits behind a thick glass wall, has not one, but two guard rails that set you back probably ten feet from the painting and several guards surrounding it. While i think this may be a necessary safeguard, it certainly takes away from the organic viewing of the painting. people just crowd around taking junky pictures, flashes going off left and right and you can barely study it from so far back. it is really a shame. In all honesty, the wall to wall painting opposite the Mona Lisa is even more awesome.

The Interactive Playground

Paul Neave is an interactive designer, this is his website. I found it through the wonderful world of stumbleupon and spent quite a bit of time messing around on it. He has some games you can play, quizzes, but cooler than that, if you have a microphone built into your computer- if you don't you probably still live in the stone age- you can have sound cause light to dance across the page, or balls to bounce around. You can blow all the little things off of a 3D dandelion. you can click through channel on his personal TV schedule, take a look at Fractals, the world or outerspace. check it out for yourself. Oh, and his page is definitely flash.

When your connection is lost...

and the webpage you are looking for just cannot seem to be found, a page like this one usually pops up. But this time, someone has taken that "cannot find the site you are looking for" page to a whole new level. check it out for yourself... but don't be so quick to close it out. Click here.

Urban photoshop in action

And yes- High Fives really are pretty great.

music meets optical illusions

The band Animal Collective's latest release, "Merriweather Post Pavillion" on Domino Records has some pretty cool album artwork. Look closely, it looks like the leaves roll.

Who said VHS was out of style?

Well, maybe watching them is, but check out this guy. He pulls the tape out of the vhs and turns it into a portrait. Here's one of the coveted, "The Dude."

Banksy

If you haven't heard of him yet, now would be a good time to get to know who he is. Banksy is a mystery graffiti artist that leaves some pretty awesome tags, heres one that I particularly get a kick out of. It really makes you question the Mona, and what she stands for.

Albert Einstein

We all know that Albert Einstein figured out that E=MC2 but this picture leads me to believe differently. . .

But seriously, go to www.hetemeel.com and decide how smart you think this guy is for yourself!

Great Work!

There comes a time when you lose yourself in the internet, we all do it. yes, even you, you nay-sayer. personally, i find myself spending more time than is healthy on Facebook, Stumbleupon, billboard, allmusic, wikipedia, and the list goes on. 9 times out of 10, I have a to-do list that i'm neglecting. . . strikingly similar to this very moment. It could simply be a sign of losing focus . . . but hey, without further introduction, click here already! Its really cool!

Oh the Irony!

Digital Artist Sheharzad Arshad puts an interesting spin on some everyday situations.

YouTube Collaboration in Bb

this is a really neat site. This guy surfed YouTube for a bunch of videos of people playing very simple ambient musical lines in the key of Bb and put them all together on this page. There are 20 clips that you can play all at the same time or take your pick. It will never sound exactly the same. try it.

3-D but. . . not?

This place figured out that by slightly shifting the perspective of an image they appear to be 3-D. I think it works.

Flash

A cool flash piece can be found here - but watch out, it's kind of trippy.

Truth revealed about fairytales.

So what really happens after fairytales end? Take a look at some of your favorite childhood stories now.

Urban Camoflage

Next time you find yourself in a store and you see someone you'd rather not, you have a few options to 'blend in' so to speak. check it out below.

Ever see a Tortoise race?

This one would win. This GIF file is a flash piece. it is pretty funny.

True or False?

Last time I checked, Hermit crab shells weren't tiny teapots, but with the help of photoshop, you can do anything. Here, it looks as though the artist took a photo of the teapot and then introduced our hermit crab friend with the help of some of the tools in the program.

just to make your day a little better

Image search by Multicolr

Cant find the perfect image in just the right color? Well, now you can. Using Multicolr Search Lab you can search Flickr for images based on color. you simply click a color on the right and using their visual similarity technology, Multicolr searches all of flickr's creative commons pictures for a match. Try it out.

More pixels than you cant count.

This site is a really cool way to check out Paris. While Google maps or Earth lets you zoom in and check out the satellite view of just about anywhere in the world, Paris 26 Gigapixels is an incredible photographic feat. They shot pictures from the tower of Saint Sulpice using a Cannon 5D Mark 2 with 300 mm tele converter. They then had to stitch together 2346 images into 138 columns and 17 rows and had to render the raw panoramic image using an incredibly powerful server lent to them by Intel. It came out to a total of 354159 x 75570 pixels for a total of 26,763,795,630 pixels... thus the name Paris 26 Gigapixels

Make Your Own CD cover

For our first photoshop project with Digital Design, we were asked to do the Facebook make your own cd cover game. The rules are simple, go to a random wikipedia page, the title is your band name, go to randomquotations.com and the last 4 or 5 words of the last quote is your record title, then hit up flickr and click "explore the last seven days." The third photo is your cover art. put it together with photoshop and don't cheat!

This is what I came up with...

Tee Fury . com

So, I was procrastinating, and went to one of my usual procrastination sites called TeeFury.com. It's a site where artists can submit their work and teefury picks work and puts them on shirts. Whats cool about it is that teefury sells one shirt a day and then its gone. Today's digital artist looks like she just draws in paint, but as you'll see below, while the quality isn't incredible, the cartoons are pretty funny.

Flickr Fotos

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.

well, I've connected flickr and my Blog. So I thought i'd share some cool graffiti that I found in Tour's France over J-term. Unfortunately, Flickr only lets you upload 102.9 MB per month and i've already gone over with 27 photos. LAME. oh well, thats how they get ya.

Blip....Blip.....Blip

First there was twitter and then everyone else tailored their 2.0 interface to be just like twitter. Here's an example of a music twitter- Blip.fm. Blip.fm is almost identical to twitter but you're a "DJ" and the whole idea is that you can share your music and get connected with other people- i mean DJs - with similar musical interests. You can also just search for songs and listen to them too. The idea behind Blip is that you let other people create an entirely unique playlist just for you. And you help do the same thing for them by "tweeting" songs and leaving a little message why that songs on your mind. Oh, and it connects to all of your other social networks....so when you blip, it can show up on your twitter, blog, ping.fm, facespace, and more!

Below, you'll find a free tour of the site.

5 Second Films. A hit.

The Site 5 Second films is a really great site. It was created by a guy named Brian Firenzi in 2005. Brian was tired of all of the "5,400 second" films he had been watching, so he decided to put together 5 second films. They cut right to the chase.

Here's one that pokes fun of the city Chico. This film happens to be 5 different 5 second films. They use a film reel filter to make the picture look older and more film-like. It's fitting for this subject matter.
